WEDDING GOWN TRAIN LENGTHS

Traditionally the size of the train on the gown indicated what rank a lady held in the royalty court. Small train for informal, chapel for more formal and cathedral for very formal weddings. However, today, many brides opt for the train length of their choice and what goes well with their gown style or design, although all silhouettes can be adapted to include a train of choice.

Watteau Train

This type of train is not an extension of the skirt but flows to the floor or longer from the shoulders or waist. It is mainly seen on Grecian and Celtic style gowns.

Sweep Train

The sweep train is the shortest extending approximately 1-2 feet from the waist and was traditionally used for informal weddings. This length is perfect for the bride who wants a bit of a glamorous finish to the gown without overdoing it. This length train is also popular on very formal evening gowns.

Court Train

The court train extends approximately 2-3 feet from the waist. It is long enough to give glamour to a gown but short enough to not get in the way when walking or dancing.

Chapel Train

The chapel train is one of the most popular length used and extends approximately 31/2 -5 feet from the waist. It is elegant and can add that bit of glamour. A loop at the end of the train or press studs can be applied to enable the bride to lift the train to allow for easier movement.

Cathedral Train

The cathedral train is usually used in formal weddings but as these can usually be detached, can be used by any bride who wants to look and feel like a princess walking towards her future husband. The length of cathedral trains usually extend approximately 6- 81/2 feet from the waist.

Royal/Monarch Train

Approximately 9 feet or more from the waist, this train length is usually used in very formal weddings. Keep in mind that it will need a number of assistants to ensure the train is positioned correctly to flow evenly across the floor when you walk down the aisle. One of the most popular dresses with this length train was worn by Princess Diana.
